Brahma is seated upon a base, his four faces representing the four directions constantly looking for his consort, the Hindu Goddess of wisdom Saraswati. Eight hands are portrayed; an open palm facing the viewer indicates protection and favor and tells the worshiper to have no fear; a raised foot indicates liberation; the hand is a universal symbol of dexterity, giving, and reaching out; therefore, having more than a pair of arms is a logical way to highlight the generosity, agility, and helpfulness of Hindu deities. Unlike other Hindu Gods, Brahma never holds any weapons. The statue is made of Indonesian brass, likely in Bali, with it's unique beautiful antique blue/green patina. comp: #97bb16 at Lotus sculpture.
